Differences between the S-5-K Grip & S-5-KHD clamps.
The Klip-Rib (or KlipLok) style panel originated in Australia almost 50 years ago. It made its way to US shores and has become a popular panel in commercial construction. However, because of the width of the hollow panel rib, ensuring a strong, non-penetrating attachment is a bit of a challenge. In response to this issue, S-5! developed the S-5-K Grip & S-5-KHD clamps. Below, we will discuss the differences between these two clamps and the proper application for each.
The S-5-KHD (Klip-Rib Heavy Duty) clamp utilizes an insert that slides into the hollow of the panel ribs allowing the clamps’ set screws to be torqued without crushing or puncturing the rib. This clamp option provides superior holding strength and load values. It is an excellent solution for such applications as fall restraint and snow guard attachment in new construction.
S-5-KHD Panel Insert Options
Ideally, the insert is placed at the desired location within the rib as the roof panels are being installed. Installation after the roof is in place involves some partial roof disassembly. For snow retention on existing roofs, the insert can be slid into the rib at the eave—in many cases without roof disassembly. But this limits you to only being able to use the clamps with a single snow guard row at the eave. Such limitation of clamp placement is not practical for solar applications or fall restraint.
Unlike the S-5-KHD clamp, the S-5-K Grip does not use a panel rib insert. The S-5-K Grip clamp utilizes one of two different size clamp inserts (the S-5-GX 10 or the S-5-GX 50) placed alongside the panel rib and within the clamp “throat” to compress against the seam without damaging it. This style of attachment has lower load values but allows for more universal clamp placement on existing roofs, especially for solar applications.
